DIASPORA DIALOGUES: FROM ROOTS TO HORIZONS

On Sunday, October 19, 2025, from 10:00 to 18:00, an International Symposium titled “DIASPORA DIALOGUES / ΔΙΑΛΟΓΟΙ ΔΙΑΣΠΟΡΑΣ” will take place at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation (Cinema Theatre), 206 Peiraios Street. The Symposium is under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture of Greece. It is co-organized by the House of Culture  Cultural Centre of the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Athens and Nomads & Urban Dwellers GR, an interdisciplinary and intercultural organization engaged in cultural events, creative arts, performances, architectural design, and cultural, educational, training, and research initiatives.

Academics from Greece, Cyprus, and abroad have been invited to participate, with the aim of fostering a productive discussion around the Greek and Greek-Cypriot diaspora, focusing on language as the primary medium for the dissemination and transmission of knowledge within a broader cultural, historical, educational, and social context.

Greece, and particularly Athens, is a crucial hub from which we will begin our discussions and continue to expand them to other networks. The Greek and Greek-Cypriot diaspora is not merely a matter of place or homeland—it is a mobile network interacting across diverse locations. Starting from the House of Culture  Cultural Centre of the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Athens, as a key ambassador of both Cypriot and Greek culture, we propose the creation of a platform for systematic dialogue, bringing together experts and professionals from a wide range of backgrounds and areas of expertise.

The goal of the symposium is to highlight the significance of the Greek language and the Cypriot dialect in the cultural and social expression of the global Greek and Greek-Cypriot diaspora, and to promote renewed methods for teaching and cultivating communication skills. The symposium on the Greek and Cypriot diaspora examines their contribution to the preservation of cultural identity through language, education, and traditions. It focuses on the teaching of the Greek language and Cypriot dialect, the development of educational institutions, and the adaptation of communities to new cultural environments. Through sessions and workshops, the event aims to foster the exchange of ideas and emphasize the importance of Hellenism in a multicultural world. The event will conclude with a reception and will take place in a hybrid format, with online attendance available via a link to be announced by the MCF.
