OVERVIEW

Vicky became a ‘dancer architect’ during her undergraduate studies at Bartlett School of architecture in 1996, where she combined Laban notation, choreography, dance, and motion-capture photography for design methods. Vicky is one of the first graduated students to pioneer the media-lab module at the Laban Centre London (now Trinity Laban) in 2000, developing a course module on video media-technology, documentation practices for architecture & performance as inhabitable environments.  At the same time, she pioneered the ‘Urban-Lab’ project a network and mediatised spatial performance environment based on responsive architecture and networked media choreography, which won her the Manhattan Loft Prize as a student at the RCA, as well as her thesis ‘Cities & Choreographies’ nominated for the RIBA President’s Medal Dissertations in 2002. Her work and training have evolved through a deep engagement with the body, space, movement, and architecture. While her work was ahead of its time, it has become increasingly relevant in the current milieu of socially connected and mediated spaces we inhabit in everyday life.

Over the last 20 years she developed spatial movement media courses and has extensive experience in teaching and leading course modules in the areas of site-specific performance, choreography & architecture, dance on screen, spatial & digital environments as integrated practices for dancers, performers, circus artists, actors, and architecture students. She has designed and delivered modules for BA level, post-graduate MA level performance practices, PhD level seminars, and is a highly experienced lecturer, practice thesis mentor, and examiner. Her pedagogy is hands-on, student-led, and experimental, encouraging students to develop their voice, honing self-learning skills to enhance their practice.  She integrates theory and praxis closely in her teaching methods to develop a strong connection between creativity, concepts, and realisation. Her expertise as a hybrid practitioner aims towards bridging the gap between performance and architecture as an integrated field of knowledge. Her current doctoral research investigates choreography and architecture as integrated practice.
